For us, Christmas is synonymous with family – not just those bound by blood, but also the chosen family that fills our lives with love and laughter. It’s about everyone gathering, sharing stories, and creating indelible memories around the beautifully adorned tree. Paradoxically, this profound belief in chosen family means our Christmas Eve table is rarely occupied by just our immediate relatives; it’s always brimming with the vibrant energy of friends who have become an integral part of our lives. Because, as we all know, family truly extends beyond mere lineage. It’s about the people you love, cherish, and actively choose to share life’s most precious moments with.

 

 

Family embodies those whose presence you desire most, whose stockings you envision hanging snugly by your own, by the chimney with utmost care. It’s waking up on Christmas morning, bright-eyed and full of wonder, eager to discover what Santa Claus has delivered. While Christmas morning undeniably holds its own magic, Christmas Eve has always occupied a truly special place in our hearts. As dusk settles, our tradition dictates leaving our unique Rocky Road candy by the fireplace, a thoughtful gesture for the big man’s arrival – after all, our Santa prefers gluten-free treats and surely gets tired of conventional cookies! Crucially, the fireplace logs are always turned off. We can still vividly recall little Will’s unyielding insistence on this safety measure, picturing the comical chaos if Santa were to slide down into a roaring fire!

 

 

The Grand Christmas Eve Dinner: A Feast of Tradition

The evening truly begins with everyone gathered around the dinner table, meticulously set to perfection. We spare no detail: the crisp linen tablecloths, matching napkins, our finest china, gleaming silver cutlery, and sparkling crystal stemware. It is, after all, a truly grand occasion, and we believe it deserves to be celebrated in the most elegant fashion. Mom consistently prepares the same cherished dinner: her legendary “company chicken,” fluffy brown rice, delicately marinated asparagus, and warm, flaky biscuits. Even the slightest deviation from this sacred menu is met with serious alarm – a delightful eccentricity that meant I grew up convinced these dishes could only ever be consumed on Christmas Eve. This annual culinary ritual reinforces the comfort and continuity that traditions bring to our holiday celebrations.

 

 

For dessert, traditional Christmas cookies are, of course, a must. But Mom and I always embark on the perilous journey of making meringues, usually at least twice. This repeated attempt stems from our perennial inability to recall whether one is meant to use a metal bowl or a glass one for whisking the egg whites to stiff peaks. One of us will always be absolutely convinced of the correct choice, only to be proven wrong. Inevitably, they don’t stiffen properly, we’ve exhausted our supply of egg whites, and a frantic, last-minute dash to the already “stuffed-to-the-gills” grocery store becomes a necessary, if exasperating, part of the tradition. Once (or if) successful, we lovingly mash Heath Bar with a hammer – yes, a hammer! – and fold it into freshly whipped cream for an utterly delicious topping. Interestingly, neither Mom nor I are particularly fond of meringues themselves, but, as I mentioned, any deviation from the established menu, even components we don’t especially adore, is met with significant consternation and a firm “it’s tradition!”

 

 

 

The Grand Finale: Party Poppers and Crowns

But the absolute BEST part of our Christmas Eve dessert ritual? The party poppers! The sudden spark, the satisfying pop, the faint, lingering scent of gunpowder filling the air – it’s an event not to be missed. For those who harbor a secret fondness for Fourth of July pyrotechnics, these festive crackers offer the perfect, family-friendly compromise, bringing a burst of excitement and laughter to the dining table.

 

 

Some years, our party poppers reveal tiny musical instruments that everyone must gamely attempt to play, other times they hold small games or miniature treats. But one constant remains: the crowns. And if you are fortunate enough to sit around our family Christmas Eve dinner table, you will wear a crown. No exceptions. It’s a rule as firm and non-negotiable as the insistence on meringues, regardless of our feelings about them! This simple tradition adds an element of playful regality to our festive gathering, transforming us all into temporary royalty for one special night.

So late, in fact, that when tiny feet pitter-patter down the hall, brimming with impatience to see what Santa has brought, we might, for a fleeting moment, regret how late we stayed up. But then, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, alongside slices of delicious Moravian Sugar Cake. And, most importantly, there’s simply more precious time with family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

 

 

The rich pecan pie will be exquisite, and the homemade caramel cake undeniably delicious. But if you ask us, those special moments – the shared laughter, the silly traditions, the quiet conversations, and the cherished memories we gather year after year – are, without a doubt, the sweetest part of all.
